Rebult for freight duties, also probably re-geared from passenger ratios to freight ratios.

This engine sat in Raleigh for quite a few years. NCDOT had it brought in as a possible back up engine for the "Piedmont Service" from Raleigh to Charlotte. It was never used, it just sat and waited for a call that never came.

Looks to be a former Canadian American loco rebuilt by Amtrak for freight service.

These units were rebuilt for Iron Road's Canadian American by Bangor and Aroostook shop crews in Hermon Maine (also an Iron Road's railroad at the time.) Yes they did receive freight gearing along with larger fuel tanks and removal of the HEP equipment.
