I worked one winter on the section at DeSmet, a stone's throw from here. We are looking at the famous Hell's Gate, the passage used by Indians for centuries on their way east to hunt buffalo. The Clark Fork River runs thru here, meeting the Bitterroot River in Missoula in this valley that was home to the Flathead Indians. The passage was used by the Blackfoot, Salish, and Nez Perce tribes. A beautiful valley, actually a hub of five valleys and several rail lines. Northern Pacific, Burlington Northern, BNSF, and Milwaukee Railways.
