I am probably pipe-dreaming here, but I pose a question or so for someone out there who maybe knows and/or can do something about it. A. Isn't Thurmond on the national register of historic places? B. Aren't the 'historic' districts not to be fundamentally changed? C. Isn't it possible, to keep the look of the cantilever signal as a part of the 'historic' site, if it needs to be updated, to refurbish/rewire the signals and fit new mechanisms into the old tri-color lights? If this is possible, it sure would be a great PR event for CSX, Thurmond, and the state of West Virginia. Just thinking 'out loud...'

I think the town is on the national register of historic places. I'm not sure the railroad would fall under that category and I doubt CSX would care since they'll replace all the signal bridges in the New River too soon.

While much of the town is on the National Register, the signal bridge itself is not. Even if it was, it wouldn't stop CSX from replacing it. It'd be nice as a nod to the town's history if CSX refurbished the tower and mounted the signals to it. Maybe NPS would be interested in making contact? I really dread seeing one of the new aluminum signal bridges here.
