I remember this trip very well, I rode the entire trip in the open front door on the baggage car right behind the tender. Lots of cinders, fires and loud noise from that massive locomotive. Thanks for posting, it brings back a lot of memories.

I was there, too. And on the evening news, there were only two stories: Marie Osmond's wedding, and all the fires set by 3985. (Somehow, the wedding got top billing...)

Not healthy, of course, but the aroma of coal smoke is SO much better than the stench of burning oil!
