I grew up in SP country. As a young woman, my first job was for Pacific Bell in Salinas. As a toll operator, I answered the ship to shore radios they had on the Daylight and the Lark during those days. The train had to be in range for the calls to be completed.
I was down in Redding, Ca. this last month, and saw and old faded out dilapidated looking bloody nose in back of a big, robust UP locomotive, almost made me cry.

Did that bloody nose unit make it to the summit still loading? By the looks of it, at the base of the 2%, I doubt it!
