Why did they shorten the smokebox?

Cory - It was actually the Great Western that originally extended the smoke box to better meet their needs. Strasburg simply returned the smoke box to it's as built design some time after purchasing the locomotive in 1967. There are two reasons I know of for extending a smoke box. The first is to improve the draft which is beneficial for lines using poor quality coal and second, to allow for the accumulation of sparks and cinders that might otherwise escape and go out the stack possibly causing fires.
