They weren't the only crew that died. The St Cloud crew that usually takes over at Winona, MN had to taxi as far east as La Crosse, WI to relieve the train. They weren't qualified between La Crosse and Winona so the night CP Winona Roadswitch crew taxied to La Crosse to act as a pilot crew between La Crosse and Winona.
