Wow, might as well weld in a picnic table and enjoy the tropical weather.

Neat!! How much more frame did they have to weld to make it all fit? Is the rear end extended as far?

Shouldn't Progress labeled this an SD40-2+2?

Tugboat, I do not know exactly how much the frame was increased, but I think around 1 meter.

Yes Doug it could be, but they prefer to use how it is ;)!

This is a common modification in Brazil to reduce the locomotive's axle load to suit the lightweight rails on their metre guage tracks. They run long and heavy iron ore trains from the mines, across many hills and valleys, to ports on the coast. Rail wear on the many tight curves is high. One of the modifications they do is to reduce the length of the fuel tank to make space for the longer trucks. I think the Chief Engineer got a PhD for all his work on the concept, detail design and testing.

I hadn't even seen the fuel tank, but it has definetly been cut down as well. Also it looks like they moved the sliding windows to the outside of the cab? Thank you for sharing your work on subjects most of us will never get to see!
