The last scheduled steam train in the USA ran on the GTW on 3-27-60 from Detroit to the Durand Union Station. With 3,600 passengers holding tickets the train had to be run in two sections to accommodate all the passengers. GTW U-3-b class 4-8-4 Northern-type locomotive 6319 lead the first section of train #21 with 15 passenger cars and GTW 4-8-4 Northern 6322 pulled the second section with 22 passenger cars. Subsequent to this final run, I was fortunate to participate in fan trips during the 60’s out of Chicago behind 6322 to Valparaiso, South Bend and as far as Battle Creek.
