We see mixed gauge train. While locomotives are wide gauge (we see wheels on external rail), rest of train are narrow gauge (wheels are on internal rail). To do this, locomotives are linked to train via special VLI flat-car.

I notice that in many photos of Brazilian trains there is a small car immediately behind the locomotives, often appears to be a flatcar with some sort of permanent "box" attached to the deck. Anyone know what the purpose is?
