Amtrak 406 is actually an operational F40PH. It can refuel itself and provide head end power from it's new Caterpillar prime mover. Amtrak non powered control units are numbered in the 90 prefix series.

Wishfull thinking, it would be nice if actually had a caterpillar prime mover. The unit, can however lead with its cab controls. It would also be nice if Amtrak's Southwest Chief actually ran on this route to serve Santa Fe directly.

Yes, in all sense, the 406 is NPCU, just not in the numbered series, there is no prime mover, only a "pony motor". The 406 has no traction motors and is indeed a Non-Powered Control Unit.
