Hi Daniel, I see why they had the nicknamed "submarines" . Is this in a Railway Museum? Some early British Diesel locomotives has doors in the front so that the 'Second man' (redundant fireman) could walk through to a second locomotive when hauling a passenger train, and check on the boiler that they used for providing Steam to heat the coaches. This was during the transition period from the last years (months?) of steam operation to full diesel operation, as the coaching stock was still using steam heating system.

I can see why these locomotives got the nickname of Submarines, Is this locomotive in a museum? And as for the door(s) in the front of the loco, some British locos also had 'Cab communication' doors fitted. This was to allow access to the second loco so that the second mad (Ex Fireman) could attend to the Steam boiler which supplied steam to heat the coaches, which at the time were still heated by steam, as we were in a transition period between steam locomotives and the introduction of Diesel and Electric traction. Great photo thanks for sharing it !
