Like this very much. Your image is very atmospheric and captures the classic US city feel (for me as an outsider - even though I've never been there). I also like the fact that there are no people in it.

Gritty, genuine, earthy, stark.....railroading in Chi-Town. I love it and loath it all at the same time.

Sure has a gritty feel perfect for chicago in that era. Nice one, Bill!

Seeing this photo and all the "stuff" around, makes me think of something that surprised me. In approx. 2011, we rode AMTRAK to Chicago and I was pleasantly surprised by how decent Union Station looked in the train areas. Not pretty, but pretty nice, all things considered.

Thanks to those who have commented. I wanted to add that I took this photo the day after I interviewed with the C&NW for a job after college (Halloween 1973). I would join CNW in January 1974 and enjoyed being part of their sales and marketing team for nearly 13 years. I always felt that the Rock Island had many advantages that the CNW did not have, but for some reason they could not execute on them. Maybe in the world of unit trains/stack trains things would have been different. And of course, CNW's purchase of the spine line between St. Paul and Kansas City was a testament to the value of individual Rock Island routes. This photo for me expresses the difficulties the property was going through, in the shadow of the Chicago Board of Trade.
