I offer to process it with DxO Optics Pro, to try improving it: removing the noise / grain and making the colors more realistic.

Empty flats on the headend? No way that would fly on todays RR. Then again those were the days before dynamic braking so the train was almost always stretched out and unless that engineer was sloppy the likely hood of run in and those flats being 'kicked' out would be low I suppose.
