Looks can be deceiving. The engine was up for sale for several years, however it was unable to be moved. The Friction bearing trucks not withstanding, the main problem lay with the prime mover. Couple years back, the engine suffered a catastrophic engine problem (that's how it was explained to me) and became dead weight. By the end of the sale, Hill AFB was parting the engine out to numerous locations, and had pretty much given up on trying to sell it. It didn't help matters that they had a buyer at one point for it, only to have Union Pacific simply refuse to transport it to the buyer.

This is quite a shame. This engine was 100% operable when the Air Force sold it as surplus.

I would often see it behind a building from the interstate. A few days ago as I passed it wasn't there. Thanks for clearing up the mystery, Alex. I will miss this pretty old girl.
