Isn't it amazing, all that power on the front going up a 2.2% grade, and the first car behind it is an empty flat.

Rules regarding train makeup were a lot different back then. As far as tractive effort is concerned those 3 huge boosters and that SD40-2 amount to the same as 3 modern Gevos. It was easier to have a ton of power on the headend of trains back then. These days, with how much effort the new GE's can produce you really can tear a train apart if you aren't careful.
