On New Year's day, 1988 I was invited into the 808's cab by a GE employee. He showed me what he described as a "game changer" in the locomotive business. What I saw was 808's on board self diagnostic software. EMD was caught flat wheeled, and with their GP/SD50s plagued by build quality issues, GE was poised to take command of the diesel locomotive market. So, we have a look at a very significant locomotive.
