This is a rebuilt member of the Battle of Britain class of locomotive, hence the rather awkwardly mounted nameplate and crest, seemingly as an after thought, originally the plates were affixed to the air-smoothed cladding as found on the 'unrebuilt' members of the class, such as in this image of 34051 Sir Winston Churchill in 1965 by Brain Stephenson; http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=516788 Rebuilding was done as and when, probably as individual members of the class needed a major shopping, they were not done in any sequential order nor were all members of the class so treated, many went to scrap (or preservation) in as built condition. Also not to be confused with the all but identical "West Country" class, named after areas of western England.
