Were they gauge converted? Or originally built for Russian gauge to serve on the Eastern Front?

Most locomotives "Class 52" were converted under the Soviet track 1524 mm by expanding wheel centers.

It appears to be a bit too cold to spend the day with wet pants, doesn't it? His pants appear to be soaked up past his knees. Note to self; align water fill tube with opening before turning on.
