Not being a particular fan of steam locomotives, I DO have to comment that the tower is an ABSOLUTE GEM of a structure, though I'm a bit surprised at how small the windows are at what looks to be the "operators level." THANKS for sharing, Ilya.

Very interesting shot. Please tell us more about the tower.

Excellent exposure and composition! Love BOTH the tower and loco!

For those who are interested, the water tower was built in 1901 and is still fully functional.

I recall a show on PBS back in the 1990's about European & Russian Steam Locomotives. It showed a Russian rail yard with over 100 steam locomotives of mostly 2-10-0 and 0-10-0 wheel arrangement. The show went on to say many of them were stored in fully operational condition, should they ever be needed in time of crisis. With the shortage of operational steam locomotives in this world, I'd say it's time.

Russia has actually been very proactive in restoring steam over the last few years. In late 2012 a decree was signed by the president of Russian Railways to restore over 60 locomotives to operating condition over the course of the next few years. The locomotive in this photo is the latest of those that were on the list to be restored. It was just finished in the last couple of months.

I'm not surprised the tower dates back to before the Revolution, as it would have been unlike the Soviets to build such an ORNATE structure. I DO have trouble believing this is a WATER tower, though, with ALL THOSE WINDOWS !

I climbed up there a few months ago. There are two large metal tanks side by side at the top.
