Having no previous knowledge of this locomotive type, I'm guessing the DE indicates it is a diesel-electric. Differing patters on sides of cars are an interesting touch.

Thank you FSWood! This is a diesel-hydraulic locomotive. These coaches are former truck-cars ("Torokko" in Japanese means to "truck") that were rebuilt for the excursion train Sagano. The last car has a cab for driver as well.

Hydraulic transmissions are something which catches my curiosity. Beyond some older industrial types, they weren't much used here in US as road locomotives aside from some experiments on the big western roads.
