I visited the Pass in 1981 and saw eight SD40-2s screaming up hill on the ATSF rails running towards Barstow with a piggy back train. I always preferred EMD sounding engines over any other, sometimes sounding like jet engines at full bore.

I can only imagine how great it sounded. The combination of 645's and chugging GE's!
