These locomotives were chained together to keep such units, equipped with select-a-power, together. This feature allowed the engineman to isolate units while in motion from the head end to reduce fuel consumption One of the SP Motive Power Review books shows a relatively-new GP40-2 being used in local service around El Paso. This rare event occurred when the unit was set out for repairs and was kept busy waiting to be rejoined to its mates the next time they came through town. I am told that an unexpected consequence of this scheme was that individual units in the quartets experienced uneven engine wear as certain units were routinely isolated while others worked the full time.
