It sure would be neat to see this beast barreling down the track! I saw this locomotive back in the 1990's and was impressed with the roller bearing side rods, the cam operated valve gear, and of course her unique streamline casing. The forty-eight star flag hanging above is a nice touch to the shop too. I also recently saw a neat 'You Tube' video of the museum moving the locomotive.

WOW! Two years ago I have visited the museum and I would love to have had that space for photos! It was my first trip to USA (december 2014), and my first contact with those historic machines, but the best part was the chat I had whit a volunteer for nearly an hour while my wife was freezing in the outside... she wasnt so happy as I was. Fantastic photo!

I've always wondered about the mechanical condition of this locomotive. It wasn't used very much and was highly modernized. I wish something with Poppet valves was running.

Mitch, is there any talk of refurbishing #490 to full operating condition?

A true classic! On my bucket list.

I think this is the best current photo I've seen of the 490, makes me sooo glad she was saved!
