Been by that vacant station many times.

It is so sad that this station has been abandoned. I am surprised that Amtrak runs right through the station. Is the station closed to public. Or can you go inside and explore?

Somehow this station looks BETTER than in previous photos I have seen. It would appears that someone has been removing the massive amount of grafitti from the walls. Except for one small tag, they APPEAR to be CLEAN !

Were there any attempts to re-purpose this building?

Nicely captured - glad to see the station survives.

Russell - Nice photo of what is left of some great architecture. It is sad to see such places of history in such deplorable states of disrepair and neglect. Again - nice photo, even though the subject is "sad". Great use of the lighting that was available as it highlights the intricacies of the structure. To comment on John Westfield's response: First - Amtrak does NOT go through this old structure, the location of Russell to take this photo makes it appear that the train is indeed going to enter through the Arch of the old station - but that is NOT the case, as the tracks run past the old building on the outside of it. Second - the building is NOT open to the public because the City of Gary has condemmed it due to it being an unsafe structure ready to collapse in on itself. However - the building is open due to the various open window areas, doorways, and a couple of collapsed walls. This place is also used by several of the area "homeless" and other unpleasant individuals (drug users, etc.) so it is NOT advised to go in and put oneself in a position to possibly get harmed or injured, as some of the "residents" don't like people coming into their "home" and may cause problems should you trespass. Plus, due to the risk of injury, the Police in Gary do patrol this area well in the daytime, and are known to arrest trespassers that they are not familiar with. I only say this as the Police pretty much know the "regular residents" in this part of town, and those they do not know or recognise as a "regular", they will stop and question and in high probability will arrest for trespassing.

Arrest the regulars! Quit messing around with these people.
