Love the color and the composition.

Very nice shot of a very interesting operation - however black diamonds are actually extremely rare and not carried by trains in bulk. This train carries coal.

The term "black diamonds" have long been used as a nickname for coal.

'Black diamonds' is a very tired (and inaccurate) cliche and should be avoided at all costs. Very nice photo though!

Black Diamonds under wire. Good stuff! I have to visit this operation.

They are in an NdeM livery because BMLP has yet to paint these units since acquiring them from NdeM -- and likely will never be repainted.

Who cares what he calls it.. nice shot.

I care. Good photographs deserve good captions. A poor caption can detract from a good photograph, whereas a good caption can make a good photograph even better.

Are you a disgruntled coal miner? Since diamonds and coal are both carbon based I get why people would call them Black Diamonds, but to get all up in arms because someone uses the term is a little strange. Fun fact there is an album in here called "Black Diamonds" for coal trains, you should take a look.

I think the caption does the photo perfect and maybe you shouldn't get so upset over it. It's just a nick name for coal like Black Gold is for oil. Time to move on with life and let it go.

Why would i be a disgruntled miner? You and I are carbon-based but no-one calls us pink diamonds. If it's coal, just call it coal and resist the temptation to to use an inaccurate banality.

'Does the photo perfect'? What kind of sloppy language is that - it doesn't surprise me you'd be enamoured with an unimaginative and inaccurate caption.

"Black diamond" is a well-known nickname for coal throughout American railroad history. Your refusal to deal with that isn't going to change anything. Deal with it. If you can't figure out why coal earned that nickname then there is no hope for you.

Keep those black diamonds rolling!

Thanks Michael, but with a PhD in material science i think i know why coal got that nickname. That's not the issue here, and the fact you can't see that says a lot about you.
