Never quite understood WHAT went wron her, as the "First Generation" Budd RDCs were extremely reliable. Was the problem poor design, or just poor build quality. The Amfleet shell has proven itself to be tough and reliable over and over again, and the mechanicals should not have been all that complex. Still wonder, WHAT HAPPENED ?

The SPVs were de-motored after the 82-83 labor agreement with the BLE. The SPVs had a pair of Diesel engines that had transmissions like a car. To reduce the "weight on drivers" and get rid of the fireman's position, one driveshaft was removed. This made the unit severely underpowered. That made the remainder no engne work twice as hard. It also voided the warranty. The weight reduction also caused the crossing gates to sometimes not come down. All this is what caused them to be pulled as solo units.
