Was it difficulty spelling, or a decision that the name would still sound the same if the H was dropped so name would fit on a standard size sign blank? I don't know that there were standard size sign blanks and see no reason why a railroad would not be able to cut a new piece of sheet metal to fit. But, you know how human behavior is.
