Well known for his work in creating our modern AC electrical generating and transmission systems, George Westinghouse did much to improve railroad safety. His two major contributions were the fail safe air braking system and the Union Switch and Signal (Swissvale, Pa.) that created and manufactured almost everything in railroad controls, switches and signalling (including this wig-wag). If you have not yet taken a read or a documentary of Westinghouse, as a railfan it would be a must. Railroads/Railways owe a lot to George and his engineers. Thanks Nathaniel, for this starry night exposure, George would be proud!

Is it even worth removing this old workhorse? Yes I'm speaking largely from a desire to simply not see it go, but this line only sees 2 trains a day (the Southwest Chiefs) and it's on a dirt road that hardly sees any vehicle traffic. Going through the effort to get a crew out there, remove it, and truck it to a scrap yard hardly seems worth it.

In seeing more photos, there were two companies involved with the making of this railroad crossing signal. The lower box is from Union Switch and Signal (Swissvale, Pa.) and the upper wig-wag is from Magnetic Signal Co. (Minneapolis, Minn.) This can be seen from the different photo angles from other photographers.
