I HAVE to ask, WHAT is that strange looking device on top of the pole on the far left ? Don;t recall ever seeing one before.

In the days before talking detectors, wayside indications sufficed. A "purple" indication meant a train had to stop and inspect for hot journal or dragging equipment and might also indicate shifted load or high water in some locations.
