Do you think that maybe there's a tiny chance that you mis-identified the locomotive?

No, there is no mistake. See California Welfare and Institutions Code section 5150.

Are these locomotives abandoned?

One would think so the way they are being striped of their parts and copper wiring, but I'm sure Baja Rail (successor to the PIR) would have a different opinion. However, the fact remains that Baja RR is in Mexico and the those three GP40-2's are at Coyote Wells, sothe ownership of them is somewhat in question. Further, the PIR never paid for the three GP40-2's and they never paid UP for bringing them to Plaster City before the big centerbeam interchange accident. Suffice it to say, those guys at the PIR bring new meaning to the term "fly by night" when it comes to ruining a railroad - or and investment scam.

Sure hope vandals don't get to them. Did you get any cab shots?

"Sure hope vandals don't get to them" --- As I predicted in March of 2016, they are being stripped as they sit. Currently, all the copper has been removed from the electrical panels and anything of value to a railfan such as the number boards, bells, lights, horns, knobs, handles, etc. is long gone. As a matter of fact, someone completely unbolted the control stand in #4500 (the unit on the other end) and tried to remove it by taking the floor panels out. Currently, there are batteries and engine parts on the ground and all the fuel caps are removed off the belly tanks, with evidence that people are trying to remove the diesel from the tanks by siphoning or pumping. In reality, once they moved these units down from Plaster City to this spot right by the freeway, their fate as “pick-a-part” scrap metal sources was sealed.
