The DL is not more powerful but can be used over most of KiwiRail network (notable exceptions including north of Auckland) Currently there are only about 8 EF locomotives fully operational and there is no set date for their withdrawal yet. The change of government might prove a game changer but wait and see. Nice shot James by the way.

I have heard that these will be kept on now and will be refurbished for further use. Is there truth to that?

Yes Bob that's widely reported. About $30 million refurbishment program. With most our power generation being hydro and geothermal and high oil and diesel prices it should be economic sense. But the overhead is over 30 years old and will soon need big money thrown at it. The ruling grade is steeper than 2% with sharp narrow gauge curves on this mountain section.
