Interesting. Until the very recent elimination of night trains in much of Western Europe (thanks to TGV's), this type of four-to-a-room accommodation was considered a standard type of commercial sleeping car provision ("couchettes"). Some cars had six-person compartments. Only first-class cars had separate rooms for individual travellers.
