Unseen to my eye the first time I looked at this intriguing photo is what appears to be the operator on the phone inside the station. Who among us can't relate to the kid with his hands on his hips? This "Norman Rockwell" like photo pretty much sums up how more than a few of us started our life-long fascination with a steel wheel on a steel rail.

It's a wonderful photo. If you had similar experiences in your childhood, this definitely takes you back. And I AM 60 yo :-) My grandma worked at a John Deere dealership 1/2 block from the Illinois Central in Newton, Illinois. Thanks for posting this.

I remember well working in the theater in Radford, Virginia until until 11:00 PM and crossing the street to the yard to watch operations until 1 or 2 in the morning. Southern power was on the passenger trains and N&W Alcos were everywhere, and it was 51 years ago.
