What precisely did they grab? Just the paper or the entire 2-meter long device? Might have been tricky to snatch only the small paper.

@ Jean-Marc Frybourg, the order form was tied to a loop of string which was held open by the Y at end of arm on mast and the goal was to get your arm through the loop much as a knight got his lance through the ring in those contests. And sometimes the train did have to stop and back up to retrieve missed orders, which was something you really, really didn't want your friends and coworkers to learn about!
