I have never understood how Amtrak decided to have locomotives with no backup HEP power. An engine failure in the Rockies could become dangerous and would certainly be miserable until a rescue train could get there.

So much can be said for GE units. So why do they fail? Are they over worked? The money paid on such equipment should never break down, but I guess all things are prone to fail, eventually. Do love the glaring red off the passenger cars.
