I wonder why New Zealand never ordered normal Geeps. Is there track gauge different.

Yes, gauge is 3' 6" with a very tight loading gauge which required track lowering in some tunnels when these locomotives were introduced in mid 1950's. It's primarily the loading gauge - in gauge rolling stock from say South Africa won't run here and some standard gauge rolling stock will. There are still lines that don't allow 9' 6" (high-cube) shipping containers unless a well wagon is used so not prospect of double stack trains here!
