That chalky road dust is from overuse of the sanders which was not unusual on those slippery U-Boats. I knew Engineers on the Milwaukee that would forget that the number one sander switch was on and go the entire trip with it in the up position. It was not unusual for sanders to stick open either....which meant that the whole consist was being sanded constantly.....the faster you went the more the sand would swirl around the units. Imagine yourself breathing that stuff in for a couple of hundred miles on a hot sweaty summer day with all the windows open!! I don't have to....I was there for the first 20 years of my career and I still LOVED every minute of it!! I must say though I'm pretty lucky....I'm in my seventies and still alive where a lot of my compadres have assumed room temperature already.......that's silica sand by the way unless they use something else.....I've been retired for 15 years already so maybe another form of GRIT is being used.
