What happened to cause this kind of damage?

Kink in the air hose a number of cars back and didn't put the entire train into emergency after it started down towards Cheyenne as it then became a run away and hit a train that was stopped ahead of it at a high speed.

Which locomotives were involved and are all three wrecked?

This is truly sad. Looks like that PTC equipment didn't help at all.

All 3 were wrecked, I guess along with over 50 cars, thankfully none that were carrying hazmat materials. #5412 was the lead motor, completely unrecognizable. 5842 seen in the photo was 2nd. And #5003 was third, maybe the only one that will avoid the scrapyard. The one thing I will say is the fuel tank from 5842 stayed pretty intact.

Man, that is a horrifying scene of the locomotive wrecked. My condolences to the 2 families of the crew members.

ALL 3 engines were a total loss; 5003 was actually sent away to be scrapped after the frame appeared to be busted
