Interesting that on this red letter date in railroad history (Amtrak start-up) you took a picture of freight train.

Yes, I have last Super Chief, Last Capitol, Hiawatha, one of last C &NW(posted here) and some others both departing, last arrivals but still had school and work. You may note what looks like railfans in the corner waiting?. I think I have a GM &O from this location, and this came aln. Everything is a scattered mess I am trying to get together.

What a fantastic historical photo. Knowing Chicago, I'm sure that you went to Roosevelt St Overpass and other locations for more departure photos of passenger trains departing that day.

Yes RRoad and a group climbed up the embankment to the C & NW, curved for departures and long stretch for arrivals. And that footbridge for the IC.

1 May 1971 was a memorable day for me as I was in Cam Ranh Bay, RVN waiting for a flight to Ft Lewis, WA on my way home to ORD. Growing up on the South Side, I knew this area well.

I can hear a model railroader with a sheet of plywood with tracks all over saying ...naw, to many tracks, doesn't look realistic.

To think a little more than 24 hours before the IC's Hawkeye made its last trip from Sioux City, IA to Chicago on the same track.
