Can anyone explain the horizontal silver or white stripes on the second unit?

Pete Greischar - those were added "reflective stripes" to make the locomotive more visible at crossings at night. The Rio Grande used both the regular yellow stripes as seen on the lead unit, and occasionally added the white reflective stripes to other units in order to enhance the locomotive visibility at night at crossings. It was more of a "safety and visibility" action, nothing special.

Thanks Dana. Thought it might be reflective for safety but have never seen that done on one of their units.
