I remember Trains Magazine doing an article on the Muskingum. At the time, this was GE's most powerful electric loco in the US. Also impressive was the fact that the fleet was composed of unmanned robots.

That would be March of 1979. The MERR is one of my favorite operations, and a modellers paradise. The automation was challenging to implement, but beyond its time for innovation and application. Trains were only 12-15 cars long, and they only had two of the E50Cs, but overall a decent operation. However, it would be a little disconcerting to me if I met an unmanned coal drag at a grade crossing, even if it was only 12 cars.
