This is the excess oil is caused by blow-by on the piston rod seals - when moving excess steam is coming from the piston rods of the front engine.

First - another excellent shot Mike, giving the rest of us an idea of what makes our hobby move! Second, anyone tell me what the chain/sprocket assembly does on the elongated 'thingy'? (Perhaps keep things greased?)

The chain is an actuator for the forward lubricator. William Kratville's Big Boy book has a good picture of it on page 54. In the picture it has a cover between thelubricator and the eccentric rod.
