It would seem that it would have been much more efficient for the original BN management in 1970 to keep the GN Hillyard line open and build a good connecting track between GN & NP at Standpoint. That way they could've run Westbound trains only on GN into Spokane to avoid climbing the hill and eastbound trains destined for GN track could switch over at Standpoint. Both BN and now BNSF have been spending lots of money to get this funnel capable of handling traffic loads and the above proposal would have been more cost effective.
