Craig - interesting photo, and nice description about the "look" of this locomotive. I also have some information about the red lights in the cab. They may come on when the locomotive is placed in Emergency, however, this is also an idea borrowed from the U.S. Military - Navy prominently. The red lights are also to aid the crew in seeing in the dark at night. The red lights help one's eyes adjust to darkness and be able to see without being "blind" after working in white light conditions. Many older locomotives have the red lights in the cab also - so it's not just something "new". But interesting information to know about them lighting up in Emergency too!

Dana, I'd wondered about that as well, but the explanation I included came from a long-time active engineer for a Class 1 railroad.
