What's the number at the top of the smoke stack? Previous engine number, construction number, or some after thought application?

I would guess her original number. In 1904 lighted number boards or even electric head lights weren't a 100% item. I believe kerosene and carbonite lamps were still used into the 20th century. Carbonite being the most likely.
