I just learned that Fairbanks Morse the locomotive manufacturer built many of these coaling towers, especially in the mid-west.

Back then, railroads built everything to last. Bridges, stations and coaling towers are fine examples of that dedication to quality of construction. With the training and education available to engineers today, why can't the department of transportations design and build a bridge with the same commitment to longevity.
