The air brake reservoirs were probably relocated to the roof to install a larger fuel tank. E-units were renown for their ability to drink fuel.

Actually the air tanks were moved to the roof for additional boiler water capacity for the steam generators. They could go there a lot of water for that. The oval tanks in front of and behind the combined fuel/water tank replaced the standard air tank location for the boiler water.
