That seems like a needlessly complex way to haul those locomotives. The only thing I can think of is that something was wrong with their wheels.

These were the locos involved in the May 17th, 2003 derailment at Matfield Green, KS on the BNSF Emporia Sub-Division

Look close enough and you will notice that the flatcars are almost contoured at the contact locations of the because of the weight. Just run across this photo, does anyone know if the crew was injured in the accident?
