There's just so much to enjoy in this fascinating scene: the old school engineer, the iron man order hoops, train order signal, running extra flag and classic NYC logo on the unit. Beautiful stuff.

Those TO stands were a great convenience for the operators--you could load them up and stand farther away from the tracks or even be in the station (if needed and only if another employee was observing the train) as the head-end or caboose passed. They were usually installed where trains passed at high track speeds. They took strings that were maybe twice the length of the strings used in mobile forks.
